It was Microsoft's first console they brought into the gaming console market. The 'Original Xbox' was competing against Playstation 2, Sega Dreamcast and Nintendo Gamecube and was very successful, having great launch titles, PC-like architecture, and more raw power than any of it's sixth-generation brethren.
Xbox LIVE was introduced to 'The Original Xbox ' in November 2002, it allowed users with a broadband connection to play against each other. It competed with Dreamcasts Online Service but later progressed to competing with Playstation 2 Online. Although Xbox LIVE was a paid subscription service and required broadband, it was still liked better by gamers because of it's "Buddy lists", better servers, better connection and extremely impressive and exclusive games like Halo 2, which was the most popular online game of all time on the original Xbox.
