Xbox Live Gold is the premium version of the Xbox Live service on the Xbox 360 and Xbox One. With it, users can not only play games against other people online but also get a few free games each month and early access to game demos.

Users only need one Xbox Live Gold subscription per console on Xbox One, which lets everyone in the family play online multiplayer with their own accounts. In contrast, with the Xbox 360, each account has to have its own subscription.

Features

Features that are included in a Gold subscription include the ability to do online multiplayer, matchmaking/smartmatch, have private chats, party chat and in-game voice communication. Other features, such as game recording and media sharing are also included in a Gold membership. Similarly, ordinary Xbox Live members can download and access the Twitch live streaming application, but in order to broadcast gameplay of one's own, a Gold subscription is necessary. Free-to-play titles also remain behind a paywall. Subscribers are benefited with space "in the cloud" for storing files. Players are also granted early or exclusive access to betas for games, special offers and discounts on select games, Games with Gold, and Video Kinect.
